How to Fold a Pocket Square: 5 Ways, Step by Step
A pocket square is the smallest detail of a jacket, and the one that says the most. The good news is that you do not need any special skill to wear one: with these five classic folds you will have the right option for the office, a dinner or a wedding. Grab a square, lay it on a flat surface and follow the steps.
Before you start
- Iron the square if it has creases, especially for the flat folds.
- Lay it on a table, not on your knee: the folds will be cleaner.
- Size matters. A 33 x 33 cm square is perfect for structured folds; a larger 45 x 45 cm square gives a fuller puff.
1. The flat (presidential) fold
The most formal and discreet option: a clean horizontal line of fabric above the pocket. Ideal for business meetings and black tie.
- Fold the square in half to form a rectangle.
- Fold it in half again to form a smaller square.
- Fold one side towards the centre so the width matches your pocket.
- Fold the bottom up to adjust the height and slide it in, leaving about 1 cm visible.
2. One point
A classic with a little more character. It works with almost any suit.
- Lay the square flat as a diamond, with one corner pointing up.
- Fold the bottom corner up to just below the top corner, forming a triangle.
- Fold the left and right corners towards the centre so the width matches your pocket.
- Fold the bottom up if needed and place it in the pocket with the point showing.
3. Three points (crown)
Elegant and festive, perfect for weddings and celebrations.
- Lay the square as a diamond and fold the bottom corner up, slightly to the right of the top corner.
- Fold the left corner up, slightly to the left of the top, to form a second point.
- Fold the right corner up, slightly to the right, to form a third point.
- Fold the sides inwards to fit your pocket and slide it in with the three points showing.
4. The puff
Relaxed and natural, ideal for silk squares with a pattern. Perfect for weekends and dinners.
- Lay the square flat and pinch it from the centre.
- Lift it so the corners hang down.
- Gather it loosely with your other hand and fold the hanging corners up behind the puff.
- Place it in the pocket with the rounded part showing and adjust the volume.
5. The reverse puff
The same idea as the puff, but with the corners showing instead of the rounded part. A little more playful and very easy to wear.
- Pinch the square from the centre and lift it, as in the puff.
- Gather it loosely with your other hand.
- Fold the rounded part down, so the corners point upwards.
- Place it in the pocket and arrange the corners so they look natural.
Which fold for each occasion?
- Office and formal events: flat or one point, in white or a plain colour.
- Weddings and celebrations: three points or a puff in silk.
- Dinners and weekends: puff or reverse puff with a printed square.
Matching it with your tie
The golden rule: the pocket square should complement your tie, not match it. Pick up a secondary colour from the tie, or play with patterns of different scale. Never wear a set where tie and square are identical. Read more in our guide on how to choose a tie to match your shirt and suit, and discover our silk ties.
Silk or other fabrics?
Silk has a natural sheen and drapes beautifully, so it is ideal for puffs. It also holds sharp folds well when ironed. Cotton and linen are more matte and work best for flat folds. All our pocket squares are made of silk.
